In its early versions, VLC allowed software amplification up to 400% directly through the interface. This was a "power user" feature that was highly appreciated by those with quiet media files. A commit to VLC's source code on February 25, 2011, explicitly noted: "skins2: use the 0-400% range for volume. This patch makes volume more consistent with the rest of vlc : - volume is now advertised on a 0-400% range instead of a misleading 0-100% range".
