Looking back from a modern perspective, what makes "Smoke Gets in Your Lies" so watchable? Beyond the nostalgia and Fran Drescher's unforgettable voice, the episode represents a subtle but important evolution in the family sitcom. Fran is determined to make Maxwell Sheffield a more "hands-on" father by convincing him to attend a school carnival. However, things take a turn when Brighton Sheffield is caught smoking at school. Fran soon realizes Brighton got the idea from a story she told him about a "bad boy" from her own school days.

Knowing that a simple lecture won't work, Fran decides to pull out the big guns. She takes the entire family, including a reluctant Max, to a nursing home to visit her chain-smoking grandmother, Yetta Rosenberg (played brilliantly by Ann Guilbert). The visit is an eye-opening and hilarious disaster. Yetta, who has smoked her entire life, is a living, breathing lesson on the dangers of cigarettes. Brighton is so horrified by the consequences of a lifetime of smoking that he promises to never touch another cigarette. In a final chaotic moment, the family flees the nursing home after Mr. Sheffield foolishly announces he brought cookies, leading to a stampede of elderly residents. The episode ends on a heartwarming note, with Max realizing Fran's unorthodox methods, while messy, are exactly what his family needs.
