Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China is set in 1526, during the decline of the Ming Dynasty. Players step into the shoes of , the last remaining Assassin of the Chinese Brotherhood. After the ruthless Templar group known as the "Eight Tigers" eliminated her order, Shao Jun fled to Europe to train under the legendary Italian Assassin, Ezio Auditore da Firenze (as seen in the animated short film Assassin’s Creed: Embers ).

The game is divided into three distinct sections, each focusing on a different protagonist. The first section follows Arno Victor Dorian, a French assassin who travels to China to learn about the local culture and assassinate a target. The second section centers around Shao Jun, a Chinese assassin who seeks revenge against the Templars who killed his family.
