For the first few seasons of Pretty Little Liars , Alison’s relationship with an older man known as "Board-Shorts" was a looming, dangerous puzzle. When the truth was finally unraveled, it revealed a deeply unsettling backstory. Prior to her disappearance, a teenage Alison met Ezra Fitz, a college graduate, at a bar near the Hollis Hastings campus.

In flashbacks scattered throughout seasons 4 and 5, we learn that a 15-year-old Alison, bored and brilliant, frequented the seedy bars and jazz clubs of neighboring towns. It was there she encountered a 22/23-year-old Ezra, freshly graduated from Hollis College, drowning his literary ambitions in whiskey.

Ezra pursued a sexual/romantic relationship with two underage girls at the same high school. He slept with Alison (15) before she vanished, and then immediately pivoted to her best friend, Aria (16), upon Alison’s "death."

It’s never addressed. They share almost no screen time alone. The show simply banks on the fact that viewers have short memories or are too invested in Ezria to care.
